Dean just doesn't get Sam's fascination with books, 'cause really, if it's any good, they'll make a movie, right? But Sam's been brooding every since they left Sarah behind, her world a stark reminder of everything he's given up to be with Dean, and Dean wants to snap him out of it. It's been too long since Sammy really smiled or laughed without that bitter tinge that makes Dean's stomach twist and his heart break. Dean's supposed to protect Sam, and he's done a pretty crappy job of it as of late.

So Dean's in the bookstore, trying to figure out what Sam might like while Sam's back at the hotel doing laundry. Dean's supposed to be at the library, but....close enough, right?

Dean prowls the stacks of books, flirting with the cute sales girl who keeps asking if there's anything she can help him with. The invitation is clear, and once upon a time Dean would have been more than happy to find out just what anything included. But he's done with that, and the third time she asks he mentions that he's looking for a gift for his boyfriend, something to cheer him up. Disappointment flashes across her face and she wanders off to help someone else.

When she approaches Dean again, he frowns, because enough is enough already. But she's smiling and holding a book out to him, leatherbound, old and a little worn. Dean flips through it curiously, then his eyes widen and he looks a little closer. He didn't know it possible to bend like that....Damn.

Two hundred dollars later, Dean's on his way back to the hotel with the book tucked securely under his arm. If this doesn't put a smile on Sammy's face, he doesn't know what will.
