Prometheus--Spoilers!
Grade: B/C-
Good: Nice effects, great setup for the Alien movies, amusing/ridiculous parallels
Bad: Subpar acting (imo), utterly predictable
Eyeroll: Yes, I get it, you're religious. Do you mind, I'm trying to watch a movie here.
If you want to see a cheesy, gory sci-fi horror action movie, get to the theaters :) Otherwise, you might want to wait til it comes out on pay-per-view because you'll probably be disappointed. That's my thought anyway.
I think enjoyment of Prometheus depends a lot on what you expect it to be. I went in after seeing a single preview and hearing that it was intended to be a prequel of sorts to the Alien movies, so my expectations were almost non-existent beyond creepy-crawlies and some cool technology. It met those goals admirably. As a bonus, there were a few nicely done death scenes. Overall, the movie excelled at being a traditional cheesy sci-fi horror flick, right down to Token Black Guy and Token Asian Guy--I'm not sure they ever even tell us TAG's name tho TBG is at least the captain.
I've no idea how to write an actual review, so I'll just say there were lots of things I liked. I was highly amused that apparently homicidal/malfunctioning/misanthropic androids is a Weyland Corp specialty going waaay back lol. As is their tendency to stock their billion dollar spaceships with the dregs of society/anyone willing to actually go into space, their complete inability to grasp the concept of a joint scientific/military expedition and their belief that flamethrowers make the best weapons. And the utter hubris of the alien race--the giant head statue in the temple/storage room/cargo bay thing was awesome. I mean, what spaceship is complete without a giant head? There was plenty more along the same lines, but I'll leave some surprises lol
I felt both the writers and the visual designers did an excellent job setting up for the Alien movies. Of course, that's a lot easier with hindsight, but I liked the organic feel of the ship and the smooth curving lines and designs. In addition I liked the touch that so many of the things these aliens created bore some similarity to themselves.
Things I didn't like/disappointed me: the acting. Caused in part by the lack of opportunity, I think, but still. Overall it kinda looked like everyone was just phoning it in--I had no emotional connection to any of these characters.
I didn't like the way they tried to paint Vickers as the villain. She was a bit cold emotionally but that's hardly a crime. Overall she did her job and did it well, she didn't try to actually harm anyone unnecessarily, yet I felt that we were supposed to consider her the bad guy. Blah.
The ending. I liked what happened to the alien, didn't like anything else except for the set up for the next movie (Alien). I definitely didn't feel that either Vickers or David deserved what they got (gruesome death and redemption respectively) and the sailing off into the sunset bit definitely goes into my eyeroll category. Double blah.
