Here are a few pics of the detailing on my husband's bastard sword.  We got this years ago from an aquaintance in the SCA who traveled the Faire circuit.  It's combat legal for Adrian Empires, though neither of us ever did any live steel combat, with a carbonized (I think that's what he said) blade to hold an edge better.  The hilt is steel with a leather grip.  My daughter was nice enough to hold it for the photos--it's almost as big as she is lol. 
It's too long to wear at the hip unless you're a giant, so my husband wears it in an over the shoulder belt.  The blade isn't a uniform width so a scabbard doesn't work, he just uses a leather frog.  Since the hilt is behind his shoulder, I got pretty good at tying peace knots lol.

The sword is epic! :D I cringe with terror as I think how hard it must have been to model out all the details on the hilt but the end result is awesome. Plus I think you have the most adorable young model of all times. :)

PS! I'm thinking of throwing you with the next chapter of TWISMS some time soon but I seem to just re-write the stuff for the worst all the time. :/ My muse is a real bitch. Her plus motivated army of plot bunnies is a horrible mixture to live with.
